Use Google! campaign

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Society, The Simpsons

It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? I mean, everybody uses it, right? Riiiiight? Well, not quite

After seeing many discussions like this one on a romanian forum and lots of simple searches made for my friends, I decided to start a campaign that should teach the people that they SHOULD search Google before asking stupid questions.

For now, I only have a messenger status (Use Google before asking stupid questions!) and I try to teach my contacts to stop asking simple (a.k.a. dumb) questions.

If you want to help, just use this status:

Use Google befre asking stupid questions! http://blog.strainu.ro/cool-webpages/use-google/

In most IM networks this will send the visitors who click on your status to this page. If you have any ideas on how I could develop this campaign, please let me know.

Oh, by the way, even Bart Simpsons supports this campaign!

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Gadgets, Jokes&Fun

Yeah, I know, it’s september :) So what? i like to give myself time to choose. I also like to shop online, so I started visiting all the online shops I know.

The first one that caught my eye was fungift.ro. I aready knew that fungift had…funny stuff ( :P ), but some of the things I found were just crazy: a Santa pen or a wine bottle ornament. Too bad I’m broke… :D

I’ll be back with more shops tomorrow.

I finally did something useful :)

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Personal

Motto:

I HATE DISINFORMATION!

I recently found an interesting blog about Bucharest: The Bükreş Blog (Bükreş is the Turkish for Bucharest), and by browsing in the archives, I found a May article about Lacul Morii. Lacul Morii is a lake made in the 80′s to prevent flooding from the river Dâmbovița. For it’s construction, the communist regime decided to destroy a church and move the cemetery of the church. It also happens that the lake is 5 minutes from my appartament, which makes my VERY sensitive to any information I find about it.

One of the comments to the post stated that the cemetery contained victims of the pague (one of the many urban legends of the area). This statement made me quite angry and I decided to set things strait.

So what’s the deal? The deal is that the author decided to publish my comment as a separate post. I guess I finally start to write interesting things :D

Urbee

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Gadgets

Logo UrbeeKrogos Software (owned by DragoÅŸ Novac) has launched urbee, an interesting J2ME application. It brings a list of upcoming events on your mobile phone, using data from Metropotam. This means that, for now, only Bucharest events will be available.

Google roundup

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Geeks

It seems Google is on a “launching spree” again. In the last two weeks thare have been at least 4 launches that interest me directly.

1. Google Analytics got public

Yupeeeee!!! If it’s impressive enough, I might just give up trafic.ro.

EDIT: Andressa might be right: for the average blogger, with no technical knoledge, this might be a bit too complicated. :(

I’m happy to tell you that we’ve just removed the wait to receive a Google Analytics account. Now anyone with a website can instantly create one for free by simply by visiting google.com/analytics or by clicking on the “Analytics” tab within AdWords. After you create an account, we suggest reading the Installation Guide to get it set up quickly and correctly.

When we founded Urchin we actually had an ad-based business model where we were able to give the product away for free. It didn’t last and we eventually went with a paid model. But when our company was acquired in April 2005 we worked with Google to determine a way to give it away for free again, this time with no ads. By doing this, we’re able to give all websites — large and small — the tools you need to better serve your customers, make more money, and improve the web experience for everyone.

Regardless of how you use Google Analytics, what’s important to me is that you’re using it at all. In other words, the more you take action based on web analytics data, the better the Internet becomes. That’s the underlying philosophy our team shares.

2. Google Desktop 4 now available in Romanian

Maybe this time I’ll keep it more than a couple of days…

Starting today, Google Desktop 4 is coming out of beta in 26 languages (including Romanian!); a Japanese version is now available in beta too. It’s easier than ever to search and personalize your computer no matter what language you speak. In version 4, we’ve aimed to improve Desktop’s performance and have added a few features you’ve asked for:

  • Easier to add international gadgets – Use the new Add/Remove gadgets interface to easily find gadgets in other languages; choose the language you want in the top right corner
  • Configurable Taskbar “gadgets” button – Just click the arrow to the right of the Google Desktop “gadgets” button, and hover over “Taskbar Button” to change the display – with text, or without, or remove it altogether
  • Change the Sidebar font size - Cick the “Options” button located at the top of the Sidebar, and hover over “Font Size” to change the setting

3. Google Webmaster Central

We always aim to offer our users relevant and helpful results, and webmasters provide the great content that we point to. Unfortunately — though we’ve had the pleasure of chatting with many of you in a variety of forums, around the blogosphere, and at many conferences across the world — we simply haven’t been able to interact with every one of you. So we’re excited to announce our new Google Webmaster Central, which enables us to have productive conversations with many more of you, all the time.

Recently, we’ve added:

Furthermore, Google Sitemaps has been renamed Google webmaster tools. It’s more than a new coat of paint; we’ve added and improved lots of geeky goodies to help give you more info and control.

4. Google Apps for Your Domain

The main idea: if you’re a company, you might be interesting in offering your customers rebranded versions of Gmail, Google Talk, Calendar or Page Creator. It’s not really for me, but it sounds interesting anyway

Google Apps for Your Domain lets you offer our communication and collaboration tools to your entire organization — customizable with your branding, color scheme and content through the administrative control panel, and with no hardware or software to install or maintain.

Programming community index

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages

Yesterday I stumbled across a programming community index. It’s supposed to give an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors.

It was all good news for me, as I am familiar with 4 of the top 5 languages and 6 of the top 10. I guess there could be a future for me in the programming world after all :D It really comes as a relief for me, as in the last month I’ve been having doubts about my qualities.

One red paperclip

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages

What can you do with a paperclip? You can use it on your CV, or opening the tray of your cdrom unit. But can you buy a house with it? Of course not! Or?…..
Kyle MacDonald thinks he can! Well, he isn’t going to BUY the house, but rather excange the clip for bigger and better stuff. You can see where he is now, by looking at the “One red paperclip blog”.

Dare I say this aloud? Boot Camp is a gimmick

Posted by Strainu | Filed under Cool Webpages, Gadgets

Charles Hooper from news.com has a very interesting article about the new Boot Camp from Apple. IT’s an application that allows Mac users to run Windows on their machines. Charles pretends that it’s just a commercial trick from Apple, who hopes to attract Window users to their side of the computer world.
