Sondaj despre diacritice

După cum unii dintre voi știu deja, până de curând, sistemele de operare Windows nu afișau corect diacriticele ș și ț (cu virgulă dedesubt). Acest lucru e acum posibil în Win 7/Vista, precum și în XP dacă ați instalat pachetul de fonturi sau IE7/8. Mai multe informații găsiți aici și un scurt istoric aici.

Totuși, creatorii de situri nu au posibilitatea de a-și da seama cine poate și cine nu poate vizualiza diacriticele corecte. Pentru a încuraja creatorii de conținut să facă trecerea la diacriticele corecte, este important ca aceste date să fie cunoscute. Vă invit deci să completați scurtul sondaj de mai jos. Vă ia 2 minute și nu necesită cunoștințe de specialitate. Dacă ați completat deja acest sondaj pe alt sit, nu veți mai putea să-l completați.

Suse Romania

Last Thursday was the launch day for OpenSUSE 11.1. As I told you before, I’m involved in translating this Linux distribution in Romanian, along with Alex and Daiana. This effort was not so well known, so we decided to make a site to make it known.

So, at suseromania.ro you will find news about openSUSE and the Romanian translation team, along with some unusual tutorials and original reviews, plus a forum (in Romanian, of course). Enjoy!

Cum să NU trimiţi un newsletter

După ce prin aprilie îi lăudam că au răspuns promt emailurilor mele legate de un phishing, uite că Banca Transilvania (de fapt BT Asset Management) au comis-o acum destul de grav. Dacă până acum newsletter-ul lor zilnic despre cum merg fondurile de investiţii era către “Undisclosed-recipients”, azi au “scăpat” câteva sute de adrese în câmpul “TO”.

O adevărată binecuvântare pentru spammeri, având în vedere că adresele respective sunt acum asociate cu un domeniu de interes. Dar mai rău decât atât, au dat informaţiile astea şi altor clienţi. Mie unul nu-mi spuneau mare lucru numele alea, dar poate unii din oamenii de acolo nu voiau să fie asociaţi cu BT Asset Management.

Le-am scris oamenilor care se ocupă de newsletterul ăsta o scrisoare furioasă şi sunt curios dacă şi ce o să-mi răspundă. Şi aş mai vrea să ştiu cât o să tragă după neatenţia de azi (dacă o să fie clienţi care o să plece, etc.). Din păcate nu cred că o să aflăm vreodată asta.

START Internships

Remember Stagii pe Bune? It appears that with some help from Monica, the message has finally reached them. You can read their comments (and my answers) on the previous post.

Today I wanted to talk about a newcomer on this market, a program called START (the website is not functional), launched by the Government. In 2008, the project will only be available to Bucharest students, unlike Stagii pe Bune, which is also available in Timisoara, Iasi and Cluj.

I asked Vlad Posea, one of the guys behind Stagii pe Bune for an opinion. He said that his team wishes the best of lucks to START, but was pessimistic about the chances of the new project. Considering the kind of brains it takes to launch a program for students without a website, I have to agree with him.

How big is the Romanian Wikipedia?

The Romanian Wikipedia now has about 100.000 articles. In September 2007 (the last time the statistics were generated) it had about 16 million words in 88000 articles. That means, if you make some suppositions that you can find here (in Romanian), that it would take 11 written volumes in a library. It may not seem much, as Britannica takes 32 volumes, but it’s still not bad considering we’re about 60-100 people compared with the several thousands of the English version.

Also, you should not compare the number of volumes in the Romanian version with the ones in other languages, as I used a different method. If I had used the same (flawed, in my opinion) method as the others, the result would have been about 50% greater – 16 volumes.

More than 4 ads in an AdSense banner?

I was just browsing around Energreen a little earlier, when I noticed something strange: in the bottom left corner of the banner, there were some arrows. When I clicked on them, the ads changed. In all, there were 12 ads. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is this an experiment or it’s already mainstream? Any info would be welcomed.

Romanian Restaurants Reviews

It’s a big name for a small mashup (in romanian) from some of the guys out there doing restaurants reviews. It’s made using Pipes, the not so new anymore webapp from Yahoo! The data gathering is quite strange and difficult, as most of the websites used don’t have RSS feeds by category.

So what will you find ar rrr.strainu.ro? The latest articles about restaurants from Romania written by Metropotam, Ziarul Financiar, PAPABUN, Jurnalul de bucătărie and vinul.ro. You can read them online or get the list as RSS or JSON. If you have any other websites you would like to see here, you can always contact me.

Layout change
